PUČKI PARK, MRKOPALJ

MAIN LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT OF PUČKI PARK

The project task is the landscaping of a multifunctional zone with facilities for all age groups, on an area of 1020 m2, located in the center of Mrkopalj, along the main city road.

Given the already existing numerous facilities (bus station, old well, the remains of a dry stone wall with the former ruins of a church, a monument to the National Liberation War, a pedestal with a wooden restaurant), the space was demanding to design. Namely, it was necessary to harmonize the old and new elements and achieve the greatest possible harmony in the design and functioning of the space in order to have a new purpose for socializing and entertainment.

This project was supposed to bring functionality to the existing bus station in order to convert the existing wooden building into a bus shelter.

The park is divided into several zones: a memorial, a bus stop with a bus shelter, a square, a children’s playground, paths and a green belt.The

dashed lines mark the main directions of movement within the park, and the paths are organized in a circle to facilitate pedestrian communication through the park and connect all parts of the park as a whole.

The existing elements – the well, the memorial and the concrete pedestal, which are the dominant elements, have been retained in the same positions.

The main element of the square is the existing well, which is decorated with wood paneling, and gets back the water pump that once existed on the site.

The existing stone wall along the stairs is lowered to a height of 50 cm and covered with wood paneling. It also gets a new function for sitting and waiting for the bus or staying in the square / park.

The memorial is organized in a semicircle and additionally highlighted by a pebble semicircular base in front of the monument, as a place for placing candles and wreaths.
The semicircular shape of the wall is distinguished by an additional border of bushy vegetation.

The children’s playground is divided into two zones, one with a formal and the other with an informal type of play. An informal children’s playground is connected to the trail and lawn as an extension of the children’s play and running area.

The surface of the playground is gravel bordered by a concrete curb. A green buffer zone with bushy vegetation as a safety barrier for children is located along the southern border towards the road.

The selected devices are factory-made, set according to standards with respect to safety zones. Made of processed wood that fits into the Gorski Kotar ambience.
All walkways are covered with stone pavers of the same type.

The bus station with a bus shelter spatially represents the “lobby” of the park. Therefore, the project envisaged asphalting of sidewalks, installation of road curbs and connection sidewalk and a new bus shelter by stairs and ramp.

In addition to the functionality in terms of socializing for all ages, the square can also be used for smaller events, fairs and celebrations of special occasions.

With the new design of this space, the orderliness of Mrkopalj itself has been raised to a higher level.
