HISTORIC GARDEN OF VILLA AURORA
Revitalization of the historic garden, Landscape design project
Revitalization project of historic gardens were approved by conservationists
This project aimed to restore the garden to its original state with as many as possible of the original elements. The project of garden reconstruction included removal of uncultivated and later planted crops that grow disorganized and improperly positioned.
The reorganization of public parking spaces along the road Felix Peršića opened a broader entrance on the west side of the garden, where once existed entry for coaches with a gravel surface. Due to the entrance opening, the public parking spaces on this road are deployed, including a relocation of minor part of the wall located at the newly built pedestrian access to the garden. It was done in order to keep the same number of parking spaces.
Circular design basis, which is an essential element of creating this garden space remained the same, as well as organization of stone walls with stairs that connect the two levels of the garden. Lower level is organized as gravel area for guests, equipped with tables and chairs,a covered pergola of wrought iron, covered with climbing plants wisteria (Wisteria sinensis), while the edges of this level are covered by ornamental and aromatic plant species. These two levels are completely retained.
The upper level of the garden is an open green space with the lawn and old cypress trees and persimmon. The new plan also includes planting of tree nuts which, according to oral tradition, once grew in this area. On the upper level an old gazebo made of wrought iron is preserved. The gazebo is set on a gravel surface which is surrounded by a variety of decorative bushes and evergreen plants. It is envisaged to preserve the original high palm trees. Green hedges of laurel (Laurus nobilis) returns to its original condition and is complemented with new plants of laurels to obtain a rich green fence as protection from view and noise from roads and created additional intimate zones in the garden.
The project envisages the restoration of the original wrought-iron fence that is clearly visible on old postcards showing this boarding house. New plant species selected in this project, were mostly present in the park environment from the beginning of the park development. Selection of plant species was based on historical information on plant species that were planted in the area of this historic garden, as well as on the entire Opatija landscaping environment. The plant material that was selected require lower care during maintenance, and represents part of the historical greenery of Opatija.
